She is happy.
She has another candle on her cake.
She knows exactly what she wants out of life at three years old.
Pink flowers, chocolate cake with strawberry milk and
wait for it...
guacamole.

Yes, these are the things I think about. Leave me alone:)
And if you don't believe me about Jettie's love of Kale Chips. Evidence.
There is way more where that came from but let's start off with the simple recipe.1 bunch of Kale
1 T Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 teaspoon Sea Salt
1/2 fresh Black Pepper
Preheat oven to 400 and wash Kale
Separate stems from leaves and break apart into chip size.
Place everything in a bowl and toss. Put leaves in one layer on baking sheet. Bake around 10 minutes or when the middle starts to get toasty and the leaves turn dark. You're kitchen will start to smell like popcorn.Promptly remove from oven and place chips in a bowl. Demonstrating the perfect color is the below chip removed from bowl for speculation.
Jettie spots perfect chip and devours.
Jettie you have something right...there.

Love this. She would get along well with my son who prefers dark/green/leafy over about anything. :) I am going to have to try this recipe!
(01.04.11 @ 06:08 PM)I'm a fan of all foods healthy, leafy, and green. Thanks for sharing the recipe, Clary! :)
(01.04.11 @ 06:17 PM)How cute! I am sooo excited to make these chips! My family loves the flash fried spinach a lot of restaurants serve but can't seem to replicate it at home...this sounds delicious!
(01.04.11 @ 06:22 PM)You have the most beautiful daughter EVER. You make cute babies! Much Love!
(01.04.11 @ 06:28 PM)She is just the cutest darn thing ever!
(01.04.11 @ 07:59 PM)If this is anything like flash-fried spinach, I will looooove it. Definitely adding this recipe to my arsenal! Jettie gets more darling every time we see her here! Those blue eyes!
(01.04.11 @ 08:02 PM)If this is anything like flash-fried spinach, I will looooove it. Definitely adding this recipe to my arsenal! Jettie gets more darling every time we see her here! Those blue eyes!
(01.04.11 @ 08:03 PM)=)
(01.04.11 @ 09:29 PM)I can't wait to make Kale Chips for my girlies...they are big veggie lovers. And Jettie is just so darn cute!
(01.04.11 @ 10:13 PM)She's such a gorgeous little girl. Glad to see she's eating her greens! What a great idea, I must try it out.
(01.05.11 @ 11:30 AM)It is so good to know that I'm not the only one with "kale chip loving kids"! We started our healthy eating journey when our son was diagnosed with autism almost four years ago. Today, after tons of therapy and healthy eating (tons of organic kale chips), he is recovered!
(01.05.11 @ 12:12 PM)P.S. We are also dairy free and my kids like the Daiya cheese so sometimes I sprinkle of little of it on top of the kale.
(01.05.11 @ 12:15 PM)Jettie is so pretty. Trav is in so much trouble. I'm going to try this Kale chips recipe tonight!
(01.05.11 @ 05:31 PM)Such a sweet sweet baby!! She's got the cutest little bootie!!!
(01.05.11 @ 09:23 PM)Too, too cute! We love kale chips at our house, too...good stuff! They go so quickly, though and you have to eat them pretty much right away (they don't last overnight!). Jettie is adorable...and how fun that you think about "signature" dishes that you can make that the kiddos will like forever.
(01.05.11 @ 10:07 PM)Clary! I love your personal posts because your family is just the sweetest. Keep them coming! And I have never heard of Kale chips but I am going to make some now!
(01.07.11 @ 01:59 PM)She is such an adorable girl! It makes me excited for kids...down the road of course!! =)
(01.10.11 @ 12:01 PM)Yum! I make mine the same way, but I add fresh lemon juice and parmigiana at the end!
(01.11.11 @ 03:51 PM)ditto to all the comments on your gorgeous girl, and the yummy recipe!
(01.11.11 @ 05:20 PM)Totally going to try this. Neil was just reading about kale being a superfood or something...so this will be tried. Will let you know if I did like!!
(01.20.11 @ 08:39 PM)Oh yum!!! That actually sounds really good. And she is just adorable devouring them!
(02.03.11 @ 02:54 PM)You have got MAD skills, girl! This is awesome and ridiculously cute! I can't wait to see your photos from the FIND workshop!
(02.10.11 @ 01:57 PM)i now have this page bookmarked even though i've got the recipe memorized because i CANNOT get enough of these. sometimes, they don't even make it from the sheet to the bowl... i might be able to eat an entire baking sheet by myself.
(03.16.11 @ 06:12 PM)We have trimmed the tree, put together the Christmas card and made candy with plans to make much more.
Last week while walking by the trimmed tree I noticed some edits to our copper and red theme. The retro, bright, adorable ornaments that way too much money went towards hung on the tree where they didn't belong.

If you have kids you know how do to the math when a toothbrush ends up the refrigerator, army men clogging up the toilet, goldfish in your purse.
Sweet darling kids.
In this case it was Jettie and the moment the math computed, my mind only thought of how much those ornaments cost and how I asked Jettie not to play with the tree. While getting the box to promptly put them back, I realized she had the box with the lid on exactly where it came from. This after respectively placing the ornaments on the branches in a sweet little group. She had to smile at her accomplishment. See the robin egg blue ornaments touching the floor like it was always meant to be there?! And I almost missed it. I almost took it all away.
Our tree is now red, copper with retro, bright and adorable ornaments.
And because they're not on here enough, pictures for Christmas cards. Note Hughes is missing two teeth with perfectly jagged adult teeth coming in and Jettie's amazingly wild golden hair.
I can hardly stand it!

Good things are coming your way, Christmas songs and treats, so get excited!!I Heart you all. I hope my family is at least half as cute as yours is...someday. xoxox
(12.06.10 @ 02:32 PM)Your kids are seriously adorable. In love with Jettie's hair!
(12.06.10 @ 02:35 PM)Wow. Just wow...they are gorgeous! Those deep blue eyes and that hair...what a wonderful Christmas gift they are to you, each year!
(12.06.10 @ 03:06 PM)LOVELY my dear :) And I hear you on the Xmas songs - I want to do a post next week on some of my faves.
PS - Your kiddos are just ADORABLE!
(12.06.10 @ 03:55 PM)Clary, I cannot get over how much Jettie looks like you with blond hair when you were her age...and how much Hughes looks like Travis. It's amazing! Hope that you have a wonderful holiday season!
(12.06.10 @ 04:17 PM)LOVE IT!!! They are getting so BIG!!!
(12.06.10 @ 04:20 PM)Too freaking cute! It's almost too much! And I think I want to buy Jettie's outfit.... for.... myself! Haha. Darling babies you got there.
(12.06.10 @ 04:38 PM)I love your blog on any given day, but when 2 of the cutest, sweetest kids in the world are on there, so much the better. I have told you before, but thank you for making me a memaw and giving me these 2 to love. xoxo

(12.08.10 @ 09:57 AM)I cannot even believe how big your babies are now...especially Jettie. They are gorgeous and they totally hit the jackpot on the good hair genes. Man oh man!

(12.08.10 @ 02:21 PM)Clary, your kids are absolutely gorgeous! Hope all is well and Happy New Year!
(12.28.10 @ 06:24 PM)In the dark class of my college years, where the only bit of light came from the slides of Van Eyck and Thiebaud, Dr. Ivy Copper gave writing assignments. A unison grown arose from the room of Art Majors. Her rebuttal was always the same...
"You must know how to write for gallery openings, Artist Mission Statements, and general communication. You can't go through life without knowing the difference between 'its and 'it's' because you paint or take pictures."
A few weeks ago Travis and I came home from a weekend world-wind of a wedding in Chicago and 2 engagement sessions in New York City completely exhausted with joy and excitement. We ate Dinges with Spekuloos, saw the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero, stood in Time Square and visited St. Peter. I photographed couples in Central Park and on cobble streets. There is so so much to share but my writing skills fail me and all I hear is Dr. Ivy Cooper's voice.
So I've made a nice neat list of that weekend in Chicago and NY...
Paul and Alyse are awesome.
So are their friends and family. Stephanie, I love you.
NY is crazy busy in a beautiful way. It's hard to get a cab and the people are nice.
I like Dinges. If you didn't click on the above link, please do before your mind wonders:)
and I ::adore:: Spekuloos. Sigh.
There are a lot of lights in Time Square.
Central Park is prettier than a dream.
Thank goodness for pictures:) I can not wait to show you more from the engagement sessions but here are some sneaks until then...

Now start getting ready for Paul and Alyse's Wedding post!!
Clary! Meeting you and travis was such a treat, and I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the visit to NYC. I am so excited to see the rest of your shots, and it sounds like I need to make a trip for these waffles. I saw the truck outside Trader Joe's the other day...
(11.17.10 @ 11:03 AM)This. This made my day. Not just for the shout-out, but because you are just radiating with joy in this post! xx
(11.18.10 @ 08:28 AM)And suddenly, with the words "Beats Nutella 10 to 1" you have me craving something I never knew existed ;)
PS - Isn't NYC magical??!!!
(11.19.10 @ 05:08 PM)=)
(12.05.10 @ 06:45 PM)For our independent free spirit we knew she would be fine but the sentimental part of me sent little aches to my heart. So I took a instax as we walked out the door and tuck in her tiny back pocket to silently remind her "you are loved and have smiling faces waiting for you at home".
Later that day when I checked before throwing her jeans in the wash, there was nothing. I figured it fell out as she frolicked outside with her new friends or met it's death being squished between 4 colors of play-dough.
Tomorrow I leave for Chicago to photograph this beautiful couples wedding day, then to New York City to meet an internet friend and shot two engagement sessions. One of them happening here.
I'm excited, on cloud 9, packing and sparkling the house up before leaving and found this...
in one of Jettie's boxes filled with sea shells and costume jewelry.
Sigh.
I love that little girl.
And tucked the picture in my pocket for my trip away from home.
What an adorable family shot. See you this weekend!
(10.21.10 @ 06:57 AM)Adore this post. No...LOVE this post. :) Have safe and fun travels!
(10.21.10 @ 08:19 AM)Enjoy your busy week Clary and don't hesitate to pull that lovely photo out of your back pocket to see your littles a few hundred times during the day!
(10.21.10 @ 12:00 PM)You totally made me tear up at work! What an adorable story. Speedy and safe travels!
(10.21.10 @ 01:07 PM)Ouch - my heartstrings hurt from you tugging them! Beautiful.
(10.21.10 @ 04:37 PM)So adorable! Reminds me of The Kissing Hand.... have you read it? One of my favorites to start the Kindergarten year.
(10.21.10 @ 07:06 PM)
I've backspaced for the past 20 minutes trying to come up with the emotions...I can't write them down.
I'm out to play and smile with my new Kindergartner. I'll be back this evening with a wedding from Milwaukee.
Big *HUG* friend, your little boy is adorable and growing up :)
(08.19.10 @ 02:33 PM)You will always be the most important teacher in his life.. no matter what gradeor school he is in.
(08.19.10 @ 05:37 PM)I can't believe the love bug is in kindergarten already...Its almost too much. =`)
(08.19.10 @ 10:23 PM)I hope he had a wonderful first day! I can't wait for the Milwauke wedding hehe
(08.19.10 @ 10:31 PM)It's a good thing my office door locks because I'm at work...crying! I know all to well what you are feeling. Good luck Hughes!
(08.20.10 @ 09:19 AM)why did he have to grow up so fast!
(08.20.10 @ 10:27 AM)Cool photo for such a huge moment! Can't believe he's so big already! As a mom, it leaves a heavy feeling in my stomach too.
(08.20.10 @ 01:33 PM)Awww, they are big boys now momma, I had they same emotions Tuesday, took Dane into his class, found his seat and he turned to me and said "you can go now mom, I will be ok"...
(08.20.10 @ 02:20 PM)Aww..they are big boys now momma... I had the same emotions Tuesday, I took Dane to his class, found his seat and he turned to me and said "you can go mom, I will be ok". :(
(08.20.10 @ 02:23 PM)Wow, Clary, just wow!!!! He looks so grown-up. . . .I just can't believe it! Where did those 5 years go??? This is an awesome picture of him, and you know that I would love to have a copy of this, please? A grandson in kindergarten. . . .wow!!
(08.23.10 @ 11:58 AM)I was scrolling through your blog...looking at all your heart...My breath literally caught once again seeing this picture. I don't know why this image is so powerful for me but it just moves me to tears. =)
(09.11.10 @ 08:54 PM)
A small peek into an engagement session from Chicago. The first is so breathtaking and peaceful. And yes, in the middle of Chicago I find a meadow tucked in the beautiful sky-rises of the city for Caroline and Chris' engagement session. What can I say, I'm a rebel:)Now lets discuss the fact that ClaryPhoto has traveled Planes, Trains and Automobiles (seriously we traveled by all three) this past month to photograph amazing people in Milwaukee, Cape Cod and Chicago. It was quite the adventure and there is so much to show you from these weddings and sessions I can hardly stand it. But I'm super excited to be home!! This week two awesome events take place around here, the very exciting St. Louis Shoot Party and our 5 year old son starting Kindergarten.
Hughes is starting Kindergarten. Wow. Can you believe it?!!
If you're there on Wednesday, say hi if I've never met and to everyone I do know...give me a big hug and be nice on the questions;)
Clary I bet you'll be great on Wednesday! Best wishes to Hughes on starting K-G :)
(08.17.10 @ 12:03 AM)I can't wait to see you Wednesday!!
My little Riley started Kindergarten today...it sure does tug at a momma's heart strings, doesn't it??
Good luck with everything, your stuff is just beautiful My son starts Kindergarten Monday and I don't know where the time went.
(08.18.10 @ 05:53 PM)On The North Shore our daily adventure was finding a new beach each day. There was a slue of surfing competitions and beauty so all of it was very exciting. At Turtle Bay Beach we made our station of towels, a Frisbee and camera. Bus after bus load tourist arrived in their Hawaiian tee shirts, tennis shoes and new cameras purchased just for their "dream vacation". They stayed on the rocks and took two shots of the turtles playing in the water. Then got back on the bus.
I wanted to stop each and every one of them. Make them take their shoes off, lay in the sand, let the sun turn their skin red while enjoying the way the clouds and water made such an amazing show of blues. Because they missed it.
I'm not patronizing the Hawaiian wearing, bus touring people because I'm one of them. I show up for vacation with my new swimming attire, sunglasses and camera empty of memory space waiting to be filled with "memories".
This vacation I challenged myself by just taking one roll of film and my last treasured pack of Polaroid 600 to force a limit. 26 shots only.
It was perfect. Hughes' new freckles appearing on his nose, his wonder on how exactly God fit the sound of the ocean inside a sea shell, Jettie falling asleep in my arms covered in sand that looked like sugar and how sweet it was she only collected the purple shells. The favorites from the 26 shots create small tangents to these vivid moments.

Great Memories for us, I hope the kids remember it too!
(08.04.10 @ 11:19 PM)This is a beautiful post Clary...and a great reminder to not "rush" through a vacation but to sit back and soak in every sweet memory.
(08.05.10 @ 08:51 AM)It could be all the pregnancy hormones, but this post made me cry. What a beautiful concept, Clary. And it's true, you may not have hundreds of shots from this vacation, but just looking through the treasured shots you did capture will bring you back to the happiness shared on your trip. You really made me think on this one :)
(08.05.10 @ 09:03 AM)Clary!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm speechless!!!
i love hawaii and you captured it in such an amazing way!

(08.05.10 @ 10:42 AM)these shots are so nostalgic and you blow me away every time you release the shutter.

(08.05.10 @ 01:26 PM)These are priceless, Clary—not only the touching images but also your commentary. You're a good soul, and it comes through in everything you do.
(08.05.10 @ 08:32 PM)So bold of you! BUT, the photos turned out gorgeously (not that they wouldn't). Such wonderful memories, too!

(08.05.10 @ 09:03 PM)Breathtaking! I just love how you balanced capturing moments and LIVING the moments. Takes quite a bit of skill and wild abandon to do so. So glad you guys had a great trip!
(08.10.10 @ 08:57 AM)Such a special post. I love how you document each and every important aspect of beautiful children's life. Thanks for sharing!
(08.12.10 @ 10:21 PM)Oh Clary, these are so fantastic. It seems like, as adults, we're always drawn to a chosen handful of shots in our baby albums, aren't we? I have a feeling these will be a few that have that pull for your little ones :)
(08.13.10 @ 12:26 PM)You know that I always love seeing pictures of my adorable grandkids, but these pictures also brought back some great memories! Good times and great pictures. . . .Can I have some copies??
(08.18.10 @ 11:21 AM)What great memories come back to me, as I look at these pictures of my adorable grandkids in Florida. Good times, good memories, and great pictures. . . .can I have some copies?

Okay, this is going to be super lame, but I'm going to admit it anyway! us. My favorite summer song right now is "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp. My little guy's name is Jack and my mom's name is Diane. She decided that would be "their" song (with some lyrical changes in it...it's not quite appropriate as is). My favorite line includes "Diane's Jackie's Maw Maw, sitting at the bar." Yup, that is definitely more appropriate! But, we sing that song all the time and Jack dances around and laughs every time. There is nothing better than that laugh!
(07.10.10 @ 01:15 PM)That is a great question! There are so many good ones and I just can't get enough of summer :-)
Hmmm...I guess I would have to say pretty much anything by Bob Marley, because it takes me back to Jamaica, which is one of our favorite places to visit. Everything is so relaxed and "No Problem", which also happens to be the name of my favorite drink we had there. Another good one is Sugar Magnolia by the Grateful Dead, because I'm a "summer love in the spring, fall, and winter."
It's such a lame song, but The Ataris' "Boys of Summer" always reminds me of good summer times. :) I remember one summer driving around to the lakes and fairs and all around the state jamming to that song on the radio. It was played CONSTANTLY.
Other favorite summer memories are:
-taking a big RV with 15 friends to this music festival - Cornerstone. Such a blast.
-many many summers spending time at the lakes -fishing, rocking the raft, paddle boat rides, tubing behind the speedboat, etc.
-movie nights in the park! Love them.
Oh, and I love The National. :) Love love love.
(07.11.10 @ 06:17 PM)excellent playlist- you have some of my favorites!
(07.12.10 @ 10:03 AM)i'll never for get the summer i started driving - ah to be 16 again. and i started driving carpool for a few girls in my class. the first afternoon we drove home i took off the t-tops (do they even make cars with t-tops anymore???) and we blared playin with the boys - by kenny loggins (from top gun). of course every song on that soundtrack was awesome so we would let it the rest of the tape (wow - i'm showing my age!) play on...wind blowing in our hair, best friends in the car, not a care n the world. those were the days!
(07.12.10 @ 11:42 AM)The song that seems to be stuck in my head most this summer is "In The Sun" from Zooey Deschanel. Don't really know why...it just keeps popping in!!
(07.12.10 @ 11:48 AM)The song that seems to be stuck in my head most this summer is "In The Sun" from Zooey Deschanel. Don't really know why...it just keeps popping in!!
(07.12.10 @ 11:50 AM)I know it sounds silly, but "Dancin' In the Streets" reminds me of that summer the Cardinals used it as their theme song, so hearing it makes me think of happy baseball fans in the summer time. And by the way - thanks for everything this weekend - we are so excited to see the proofs!
(07.12.10 @ 12:48 PM)Whoops. I put "Dancin' in the Streets" when really I meant "The Heat is On" - I guess they are both good summer songs...but upon viewing my late 80's Cardinals t-shirt, I realized I submitted the wrong song!
(07.13.10 @ 12:08 PM)I'd have to say "Summer Breeze". It always makes me imagine lying in a field of jasmine with my love and just soaking up the sun until it sets :)
(07.13.10 @ 05:32 PM)I love summer. I love the heat. I love it all. Recent faves: Better Together – Jack Johnson – Not only was this played at our favorite breakfast spot in Kauai on our honeymoon but now I love singing it to our 7-month old son. Stay (Wasting Time) – Dave Matthews Band – Oh, this just makes me want to lounge on a blanket in the park on a hot day with my man. Oldie but good summer song: Paradise City – Guns and Roses – This is about being 14 and having awesome parents who would take me and my girlfriends to state fairs, carnivals and the like to play. We would cruise the midway testing every ride with the music the carnival workers played blaring in the background, specifically Guns and Roses. I can still feel the wind in my hair, my best friends next to me, going in crazy circles on some ride, laughing hysterically, without a care in the world.
(07.14.10 @ 09:24 AM)Blue Rocking Chair by Kenny Chesney. The summer we were building our home my husband, son, and I had to live in a camper. Yes, I said LIVE in a camper. Every night when I cooked dinner in the tiny little oven with 2 burners on top, we would put that CD on (because it was stuck in the CD player and all we had to listen to) and open the windows and feel like we were truly alive. I don't even like Kenny Chesney that much - but when I hear that song - I remember that difficult summer in a camper - when my family was closer and happier than ever.

(07.14.10 @ 09:51 PM)Summer 2005 I was in my third trimester of pregnancy with my first son. I would always have the radio on while I got ready for the day, and at that time, the radio was playing the pussycat dolls--don't cha--over and over again. Three mornings in a row that song was played on the radio, and during its entirety my baby would start moving around/kicking like crazy. Every time I hear that song now it reminds me of that hot summer and feeling baby kicks from inside. :)
(07.16.10 @ 02:17 PM)That would have to be; "All she wants to do is dance." by Don Henley. Reminds me of a carefree time hanging out with good friends, staying out late and closing a few places down.

(07.19.10 @ 02:41 PM)Happy Birthday to my favorite 5 year old boy who currently wants nothing more than to be a Pawpaw and have a 'mustache under his nose'. Who thinks life is mainly about fishing and skateboarding with chocolate chip cookies mixed in. Who loves laughing until his belly button hurts. Sigh. I love you.
Where does he get all that hair? Five years of blessings, laughter and love. sigh. Happy Birthday Hughes!
