Yum, chocolate but let's start with the music. Here's a list of favorites over the years and some new ones thanks to Gail. The ones with links you can download and even finish reading the blog post listening to. All of them I highly recommend to cure you from the regular holiday songs they play on the radio...
Carol of the Bells / The Bird and The Bee
All That I Want / The Weepies
Song for a Winter's Night / Sarah McLachlan
Come Thou Frount of Every Blessing / Sufjan Stevens
Joy to The World / Sufjan Stevens
Oiche Chiun-Silent Night / Enya
Skating / Vince Guaraldi Trio
Portuguese Love Theme / Craig Armstrong (the really pretty music from "Love Actually", you're welcome)
Sleigh Ride / Ella Fitzgerald
What Are You Doing New Year's Eve / Diana Krall & The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra
***Gail's recommendations***
Tiny Tree Christmas / Guster
It's Christmas / Coconut Records
and
That Spirt of Chirstmas / Ray Charles
"I was sittin by the fire side
Taking a walk through the snow
Listening to a children's choir
Singing songs about Jesus
The blessed way that he came to us"
Can't believe I forgot this one because those are the most perfect words together in a Christmas song, ever. For me anyway...fire, snow, children, Jesus.
Now, Chocolate covered caramels with sea salt. This recipe came together out of necessity. Crate and Barrel has these caramels and they are perfect in every way. Chocolate, caramel, a bit of salt. So good. A few years ago I purchased some (meaning three) boxes to just have around. Let the record show I was 9 months pregnant. The nice sales clerk said I was a "good gift giver" and I smiled because if I opened my mouth "yea, for myself!" would have come out.
So like I was saying this recipe is out of necessity so I don't have lie or have awkward exchanges at Crate and Barrel. The best caramel recipe I found is Mark Bitman's then I simply cover them with chocolate (6 oz) and sprinkle of sea salt.
the ingredients
the best part chocolate and sea salt, both from our CSA. Yes, CSA people.
the candy making process to get those pretty caramel pillows
the chocolate covered caramels getting salt sprinkled
the end product
We wrap them up in parchment squares, place some in our fridge, packed in Hughes' lunches, in a jar on the counter and some out for enjoying on our desk. Such a favorite treat at this time of year. And I want to give them (C&B version) to you along with some music. The commenter who leaves their favorite holiday treat and guesses the closest number of caramels left sitting on my desk by next Wednesday will get Chocolate covered Caramels from C&B along with an iTunes gift card.
Happy Weekend all!!I'm going to say 0 because that is how many would be left if i had them on MY desk. I love me some carmels. My favorite holiday treat are the candy cane cookies my mom use to make with me!
(12.10.10 @ 04:16 PM)I'm going to guess 3...don't ask why it's just the number I have in my head today :) But my favorite holiday treat is a simple red and white candy cane..brings out the kid in everyone
(12.10.10 @ 05:10 PM)My hands down favorite Christmas treat- my nana's shortbread cookies. she rolls the shortbread paper thin, decorates them with sprinkles, cuts them in christmas shapes.... and no one, I mean NO ONE can make them just like her. i love her and her cookies so much.
My guess: zero are left :)
(12.10.10 @ 05:37 PM)As for the candy, I'm going to say 1. My favorite holiday treat are the snowman cookies that the University Center at SIUE makes each year. Each year, there is a holiday reception for all of the University employees hosted by the Chancellor...people come from all across campus for these cookies!! I seriously dream about them (they are iced sugar cookies shaped like snowmen) all year.
(12.10.10 @ 08:58 PM)I would say 1, just because my mom always told me that ladies should always leave something on their plate (lol). My favorite christmas treat is eschimo cookies (they have coconut in them...I love coconut!) it is my husband's grandma's passed down family recipe!
(12.11.10 @ 11:19 AM)That Ray Charles song is one of my FAVORITES. It plays during Christmas Vacation during one of my favorite parts too. :) I really want to download that Portuguese Love Theme but it's not on itunes! Apple fail. I do have the Glasgow Love Theme but it's kind of depressing. Anyway, my favorite Christmas treat is definitely Chex mix. My mom only makes it during the holidays and, of course, it's delicious. I think you'll have 0 left by Wednesday...they look too delicious not to devour them!
(12.12.10 @ 11:53 AM)1) Why does everything look like so much FUN at your house? I love baking, but my baking is never as clean, neat, and calm as yours looks, especially with a Lucy involved!
2) You are totally convincing me to join your CSA...the chocolate? The sea salt?! I LOVE IT ALL!!!!!
3) I wish I were your neighbor.
4) Favorite Christmas treat--chocolate crackles that my mom makes (it's always better if someone else makes them)-gooey, chewy, chocolatey, and covered in powdered sugar. Love 'em!
Caramels left...that is a tough one. Let's go with 5...it's my favorite number!
(12.13.10 @ 09:03 AM)i think you will have 5 left. my favorite holiday treat is hot chocolate.
(12.14.10 @ 11:13 AM)It sounds unusual, but we have a "cookie" that we make at Christmastime that we call "Chocolate Chip Cheerios". I guess it is kind of a chocolaty-peanut-buttery-fudgy type thing with cheerios cereal in it. Absolutely delicious and only available in our house around Christmas. And as for the caramels, if it were me, there'd be about 2 left. So that's my guess - 2. :)
(12.14.10 @ 02:01 PM)Ooooh...look at that little shout-out on the blog today! You are too dear, friend...You and me, musical sisters in spirit, we are ;) Working on a post about my fave Xmas music too!
As for those caramel culinary confections, I am in AWE and I expect at the MOST for there to be two left in the bottom of that bowl! One for me and you to share if and when that February visit happens! haha
My fave Xmas treat? Peppermint stick ice cream. Yummy!
(12.14.10 @ 03:07 PM)For our independent free spirit we knew she would be fine but the sentimental part of me sent little aches to my heart. So I took a instax as we walked out the door and tuck in her tiny back pocket to silently remind her "you are loved and have smiling faces waiting for you at home".
Later that day when I checked before throwing her jeans in the wash, there was nothing. I figured it fell out as she frolicked outside with her new friends or met it's death being squished between 4 colors of play-dough.
Tomorrow I leave for Chicago to photograph this beautiful couples wedding day, then to New York City to meet an internet friend and shot two engagement sessions. One of them happening here.
I'm excited, on cloud 9, packing and sparkling the house up before leaving and found this...
in one of Jettie's boxes filled with sea shells and costume jewelry.
Sigh.
I love that little girl.
And tucked the picture in my pocket for my trip away from home.
What an adorable family shot. See you this weekend!
(10.21.10 @ 06:57 AM)Adore this post. No...LOVE this post. :) Have safe and fun travels!
(10.21.10 @ 08:19 AM)Enjoy your busy week Clary and don't hesitate to pull that lovely photo out of your back pocket to see your littles a few hundred times during the day!
(10.21.10 @ 12:00 PM)You totally made me tear up at work! What an adorable story. Speedy and safe travels!
(10.21.10 @ 01:07 PM)Ouch - my heartstrings hurt from you tugging them! Beautiful.
(10.21.10 @ 04:37 PM)So adorable! Reminds me of The Kissing Hand.... have you read it? One of my favorites to start the Kindergarten year.
(10.21.10 @ 07:06 PM)
A small peek into an engagement session from Chicago. The first is so breathtaking and peaceful. And yes, in the middle of Chicago I find a meadow tucked in the beautiful sky-rises of the city for Caroline and Chris' engagement session. What can I say, I'm a rebel:)Now lets discuss the fact that ClaryPhoto has traveled Planes, Trains and Automobiles (seriously we traveled by all three) this past month to photograph amazing people in Milwaukee, Cape Cod and Chicago. It was quite the adventure and there is so much to show you from these weddings and sessions I can hardly stand it. But I'm super excited to be home!! This week two awesome events take place around here, the very exciting St. Louis Shoot Party and our 5 year old son starting Kindergarten.
Hughes is starting Kindergarten. Wow. Can you believe it?!!
If you're there on Wednesday, say hi if I've never met and to everyone I do know...give me a big hug and be nice on the questions;)
Clary I bet you'll be great on Wednesday! Best wishes to Hughes on starting K-G :)
(08.17.10 @ 12:03 AM)I can't wait to see you Wednesday!!
My little Riley started Kindergarten today...it sure does tug at a momma's heart strings, doesn't it??
Good luck with everything, your stuff is just beautiful My son starts Kindergarten Monday and I don't know where the time went.

Okay, this is going to be super lame, but I'm going to admit it anyway! us. My favorite summer song right now is "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp. My little guy's name is Jack and my mom's name is Diane. She decided that would be "their" song (with some lyrical changes in it...it's not quite appropriate as is). My favorite line includes "Diane's Jackie's Maw Maw, sitting at the bar." Yup, that is definitely more appropriate! But, we sing that song all the time and Jack dances around and laughs every time. There is nothing better than that laugh!
(07.10.10 @ 01:15 PM)That is a great question! There are so many good ones and I just can't get enough of summer :-)
Hmmm...I guess I would have to say pretty much anything by Bob Marley, because it takes me back to Jamaica, which is one of our favorite places to visit. Everything is so relaxed and "No Problem", which also happens to be the name of my favorite drink we had there. Another good one is Sugar Magnolia by the Grateful Dead, because I'm a "summer love in the spring, fall, and winter."
It's such a lame song, but The Ataris' "Boys of Summer" always reminds me of good summer times. :) I remember one summer driving around to the lakes and fairs and all around the state jamming to that song on the radio. It was played CONSTANTLY.
Other favorite summer memories are:
-taking a big RV with 15 friends to this music festival - Cornerstone. Such a blast.
-many many summers spending time at the lakes -fishing, rocking the raft, paddle boat rides, tubing behind the speedboat, etc.
-movie nights in the park! Love them.
Oh, and I love The National. :) Love love love.
(07.11.10 @ 06:17 PM)excellent playlist- you have some of my favorites!
(07.12.10 @ 10:03 AM)i'll never for get the summer i started driving - ah to be 16 again. and i started driving carpool for a few girls in my class. the first afternoon we drove home i took off the t-tops (do they even make cars with t-tops anymore???) and we blared playin with the boys - by kenny loggins (from top gun). of course every song on that soundtrack was awesome so we would let it the rest of the tape (wow - i'm showing my age!) play on...wind blowing in our hair, best friends in the car, not a care n the world. those were the days!
(07.12.10 @ 11:42 AM)The song that seems to be stuck in my head most this summer is "In The Sun" from Zooey Deschanel. Don't really know why...it just keeps popping in!!
(07.12.10 @ 11:48 AM)The song that seems to be stuck in my head most this summer is "In The Sun" from Zooey Deschanel. Don't really know why...it just keeps popping in!!
(07.12.10 @ 11:50 AM)I know it sounds silly, but "Dancin' In the Streets" reminds me of that summer the Cardinals used it as their theme song, so hearing it makes me think of happy baseball fans in the summer time. And by the way - thanks for everything this weekend - we are so excited to see the proofs!
(07.12.10 @ 12:48 PM)Whoops. I put "Dancin' in the Streets" when really I meant "The Heat is On" - I guess they are both good summer songs...but upon viewing my late 80's Cardinals t-shirt, I realized I submitted the wrong song!
(07.13.10 @ 12:08 PM)I'd have to say "Summer Breeze". It always makes me imagine lying in a field of jasmine with my love and just soaking up the sun until it sets :)
(07.13.10 @ 05:32 PM)I love summer. I love the heat. I love it all. Recent faves: Better Together – Jack Johnson – Not only was this played at our favorite breakfast spot in Kauai on our honeymoon but now I love singing it to our 7-month old son. Stay (Wasting Time) – Dave Matthews Band – Oh, this just makes me want to lounge on a blanket in the park on a hot day with my man. Oldie but good summer song: Paradise City – Guns and Roses – This is about being 14 and having awesome parents who would take me and my girlfriends to state fairs, carnivals and the like to play. We would cruise the midway testing every ride with the music the carnival workers played blaring in the background, specifically Guns and Roses. I can still feel the wind in my hair, my best friends next to me, going in crazy circles on some ride, laughing hysterically, without a care in the world.
(07.14.10 @ 09:24 AM)Blue Rocking Chair by Kenny Chesney. The summer we were building our home my husband, son, and I had to live in a camper. Yes, I said LIVE in a camper. Every night when I cooked dinner in the tiny little oven with 2 burners on top, we would put that CD on (because it was stuck in the CD player and all we had to listen to) and open the windows and feel like we were truly alive. I don't even like Kenny Chesney that much - but when I hear that song - I remember that difficult summer in a camper - when my family was closer and happier than ever.

(07.14.10 @ 09:51 PM)Summer 2005 I was in my third trimester of pregnancy with my first son. I would always have the radio on while I got ready for the day, and at that time, the radio was playing the pussycat dolls--don't cha--over and over again. Three mornings in a row that song was played on the radio, and during its entirety my baby would start moving around/kicking like crazy. Every time I hear that song now it reminds me of that hot summer and feeling baby kicks from inside. :)
(07.16.10 @ 02:17 PM)That would have to be; "All she wants to do is dance." by Don Henley. Reminds me of a carefree time hanging out with good friends, staying out late and closing a few places down.

(12.14.09 @ 08:41 AM)I love these images! I really struggle with allowing myself to take fun snapshots of my own family. How wonderful to have that delete button taken out of the picture all together.
(12.14.09 @ 08:43 AM)film is the best!
awesome images!!! it's so unique and so film! :)
I want to buy a film camera for months now. I really hope I win!!!
:) (photography@biancavalentim.com)
I want your holga touch..... I think mine must be broken. Must. Get. New. One. Maybe i'll win...? :)
(12.14.09 @ 08:50 AM)Your pictu always make life look so much more fun! I love this camera--Scott has been looking at getting similar cameras but perhaps I should look into this one. I must admit, we have a film camera that has been sitting around collecting dust these days. Back to it!
(12.14.09 @ 09:03 AM)Once again STUNNING photos! You never cease to amaze me. (shannon.price8@gmail.com)
(12.14.09 @ 09:29 AM)I would love the opportunity to ditch all the rules!!!
(12.14.09 @ 09:34 AM)i love these images! i'd love to give this camera a shot -- i love film but my poor old pentax has sighed it's last sigh :(
(12.14.09 @ 10:07 AM)I love letting go of the rules and embracing the random results! Haven't had a chance to take film pics for a few years and would LOVE to get back into it!
(12.14.09 @ 10:11 AM)count me in! ever since your last post on film, i've been shooting with my old film canon rebel GII. i love getting my images back full of surprises!
(12.14.09 @ 10:18 AM)I have always loved your photography and admire your talent. This camera looks like a great opportunity to get into photography!
(12.14.09 @ 10:19 AM)You look beautiful in that pic of you and Jettie!! And of course I can't pass up a Clary contest!!
(12.14.09 @ 10:53 AM)oooh ooh ooh - i love new adventures!!! this would be so fun to get the chance at an awesome camera and a lifetime of surprises :) love the pics, too, clary! oh, and did you see my tweet about how my mom told me you'd be doing my maternity and newborn photos? so excited!!!
(12.14.09 @ 12:30 PM)This is an AWESOME idea! I just held the holga a couple weeks back and thought about what a fun opportunity it would bring. Crossing my fingers for win!
(12.14.09 @ 01:26 PM)Wow! I'm truly inspired by your lovely photographic skills. Some day I woud love to learn the ways of photography and a camera would be a great way too start!
(12.14.09 @ 01:56 PM)While I am, of course, looking for mostly digital you would definitely be welcome to bring some film to our wedding! Perhaps for some gorgeous bride&groom photos pre-wedding or on the golf course during the reception? :)
(12.14.09 @ 02:02 PM)Did you ever announce the winner of your last contest? You asked commenters to list a romantic photo op.
(12.14.09 @ 02:40 PM)These photos are beautiful. I actually have an old film camera that I still use from time to time. I really do love seeing what happens when I develop the photos. Sometimes they are hilarious. Sometimes they are horrible. It's always a guessing game that I love to play.
(12.14.09 @ 04:00 PM)Film is so unbelievably romantic, and yet so rare these days. I have always been drawn to images captured in film, they exude such a beautiful softness. Just the excitement of not knowing what your images are going to look like creates such a fun and exciting dynamic. My interest in photography is a bit new, so I would love to get my hands on this bad boy and try it out! Thanks for such a great contest!
(12.14.09 @ 04:14 PM)I haven't shot film in YEARS! It would be great to play for once... breaking rules is ALWAYS fun! ;)
(12.14.09 @ 05:01 PM)Photography fascinates and me and I don't have enough money to invest in more than a point and shoot camera - tried to win the contest last time and failed, hope this one is a success!!
(12.14.09 @ 06:38 PM)Hey Clary! These are gorgeous! And hey, I'm a zoo keeper- so adventure, randomness and well, dirty hands lets say ;) are ALL part of my day job. Now if only I could rock the film Clary-style!
(12.14.09 @ 07:07 PM)Clary, as usual these photos are AMAZING! I can't believe how big your little ones are getting!
(12.14.09 @ 08:09 PM)Love these new photos of your family! The look and feel of film pictures are so lovely.
(12.14.09 @ 11:01 PM)Your family pics always make my heart melt and you're right about the waiting for results. I remember our old impromptu phot sessions and having to wait for days to know if we had a good picture or not. Then jumping over each others shoulders trying to see the pictures first. Well maybe I was the one jumping. Darn you and your tallness.. =)
(12.15.09 @ 05:30 AM)Clary your creativity has inspired me to look into the beauty that can be captured with great photos! I would love a chance to win the camera, thanks and love from Beau and Ali
(12.15.09 @ 10:22 AM)Such sweet family photos. I love shooting with film because of the vintage look. Great contest!
(12.15.09 @ 11:19 AM)Mainly I just wanted to say I'm jealous about the christmas tree farm. I had to get my tree from the home depot. We used to go to the mountains to cut trees as a kid. I miss that. Happy holidays!
(12.15.09 @ 04:45 PM)I need some randomness while procrastinating writing my dissertation! This camera sounds like a unique way to capture original works of art! I would love it. {alaux3@hotmail.com}
(12.15.09 @ 09:29 PM)those are just cool. you are quite the amazing photographer :) i love the look of those photos - i'd LOVE to try out that camera :) pick me :) pick me :)
(12.16.09 @ 08:36 AM)I feel the exact same way...I've been wanting to pick one up forever! :)
(12.16.09 @ 11:31 AM)I would love to get my hands dirty with a Holga! I love photographing with film and I'm trying to create my own darkroom one of these days...
(mnbaird@gmail.com)
(12.16.09 @ 01:53 PM)I would love to try a holga with the polaroid back!!!!
(12.16.09 @ 03:44 PM)Clary, you are so stinkin' cool. So I'm curious, which model is yours? I am DYING for one of the new FujiFilm Instax cameras too!!!!
(12.23.09 @ 08:17 AM)

ahhhh such great pics, looks like heaven!!!
(10.27.09 @ 02:41 PM)Clary, your so cute :) Makes me happy that you enjoyed Cali...glad I was able to share a margarita with you there!
(10.27.09 @ 03:08 PM)Great pics! My husband and I spent a week in San Fran and Napa for our 1 year anniversary last year and the bike ride around SF and across the GGB was one of my favorite parts.
(10.27.09 @ 03:32 PM)Looks like we had similar vacations this year! ;) But darn it if we didn't get to bike the Golden Gate...maybe next time. I too loved the Pacific Highway and can still smell the air. PS - Love me some Ray LaMontagne! Great choices in music & travel!
(10.27.09 @ 03:47 PM)You're adorable my friend! I need to find my life list...I think it's packed away in our trunk. PS I love Spoon, Radiohead and Arcade Fire! Great list!
(10.27.09 @ 06:37 PM)These are so fun, and what a great idea for a dream list. Might have to incorporate that one somehow in my future plans. ;) Love the photo of you driving, and the ones at Crystal Cove - amazing!
(10.27.09 @ 10:16 PM)=)
(10.28.09 @ 04:58 AM)Clary you are all too cute!!! Love the pics! Thanks for sharing!!!
(10.28.09 @ 07:48 AM)Your so cute. You have inspired me to make a written list. We all have them in our heads but I have never wrote one out. Hmm...now where do I begin...
(10.28.09 @ 09:17 AM)I tried that braid thing the other day, and it just didn't work out for me. I don't get it. haha
(It looked so cute in your hair at your Oct. 3rd wedding I second shot with you.) :)
To each and every one of you that want to write a list, find a list, make a list. Do it!! You will be amazed!
Trish-you are too funny, advice-don't look in a mirror when braiding, it gets confusing:)
(10.28.09 @ 04:13 PM)Amazing pics, Clary! I love California and the Pacific Coast Highway. San Fran is one of my favorite cities and Andy & I got actually got engaged on the beach in Santa Cruz =)
(10.28.09 @ 07:49 PM)Okay, I really can't believe (despite you sending me the link) that it took me this long to pour over your playlist on this trip. OMG YOU LOVE CHARLIE MARS TOO?!!!! Darkside is definitely one of my fave songs of the year. I got to see him when he opened for my fave artist, Griffin House, back in February here and have found him adorable ever since.
And having just been in SoCal where I too got to drive down the PCH and see the surfers surfing and the waves crashing and the candy-colored skies and thought, IS THIS REAL?!!! I can TOTALLY see why you have a list of 27 goals with that being one of them ;)
PS - Ironically, Wake Up was playing SO much on the radios out in LA. I think it's funny Arcade Fire has been around forever and suddenly, a movie about a kid named Max comes out with that song attached and everyone's listening ;)
(10.30.09 @ 08:08 AM)awesome playlist!!!!
Thanks for sharing some of your dreams ...
very inspiring! :)

Congrats Clary! Oh and I will need to come by and get some of those cookies...I'm just down the road in Waterloo. :]
(01.20.11 @ 11:42 AM)Good luck getting through the snow:) The cookies are so good and easy!!
(01.20.11 @ 12:07 PM)I love that quote...totally forgot about it! Thanks for the reminder...BEAUTIFUL work, as always!!!!!!
